This is much different than traditional WiFi, which usually only consisted of a single wireless router that was either attached to your Internet Provider's modem, or was built right into their modem. Mesh networks are designed to be modular.
This means that your home network will consist of multiple Netgear Orbi mesh networking devices; one primary Orbi device that connects to your Internet Provider's modem, and up to three "satellite" devices that will all broadcast WiFi. Netgear offers solutions for homes sizing square feet. While these distances are a rough estimation, other factors can increase or decrease the number of Orbi devices you might need to create a reliable WiFi signal in all the areas of your home that are important to you.
Getting started with Netgear Orbi mesh networking devices is not much different than setting up a traditional wireless router. All Orbi mesh networks must begin with a primary device or router. This primary device is made to connect to your Internet Provider's modem. This primary Orbi device is where your WiFi network begins, very much like how a traditional wireless router creates a WiFi signal in your home. You can add up to three Orbi "satellite" devices in your home that will also broadcast WiFi.
Having these multiple WiFi broadcast points ensures that all of your home is blanketed in WiFi signal. All Orbi mesh networks must begin with a primary device or "router. If you're connecting the coaxial cable to a connector on the wall, make sure that end of the cable is also firmly connected. If the Online Light fourth on the right doesn't turn solid blue within 10 minutes, you may need to contact your Internet Service Provider to be able to continue. When the Online light turns solid blue, the cable modem router is not yet connected to the Internet and it must be activated.
This process will be covered later on. You can add up to three secondary Orbi "satellite" devices in your home that will also broadcast WiFi. There are a number of Orbi satellite devices available from Netgear.
For easier setup, place your Orbi Outdoor Satellite close to the primary Orbi device first. Once it has been added to your WiFi mesh network, it can be relocated outdoors.
Now that your primary and secondary Orbi devices have been physically set up, we need to make sure that they are properly communicating with one another. Thankfully, each secondary Orbi "satellite" device has a light that will indicate what our next steps need to be. Take a look at the light on each secondary Orbi device in your home to determine which action you'll need to take next:.
The LED will then light one of the following colors to show its status for about three minutes and then will turn off. At this point, all of your secondary Orbi "satellite" devices should display a solid blue or white light.
Retrieve the default WiFi Network Name and Password from the clear sleeve on top or the sticker on the bottom of the Orbi primary device. Message 4 of 5. Message 5 of 5. Need More Help? Contact Support.I'm currently in the middle of a really frustrating experience involving a new Spectrum GIG install in Milwaukee.
I'm at a loss here - no one at Spectrum can give me a straight answer. Or even worse, no one knows the answer. Out of four techs sent to my house in two days, only one of them had ever done a gigabit install.
Phone support has been pretty much exhausted, and if today's install attempt goes sideways, I'll probably just end up downgrading to my previous service because, in actuality, it is faster with my wireless router. Does anyone know if you can use your own wireless router with Spectrum's GIG modem? Or is there anyone out there that confirm there's a compatibility issue with the modem and the Netgear Nighthawk series of wireless routers?
Go to Solution. When they replaced the modem with their new Spectrum GIG modem, I went through a factory reset to clear out any and all setting from my wireless router. Then I went through the setup procedure, but no Internet connection was pushing through to the wireless router. I even went as far as trying to see if cloning my PC's MAC address would help trick it into connecting, but no dice. It's nice to hear that I should be able to use my own wireless equipment with the Spectrum GIG install.
That flies in the face of many of the people that I've talked to that work at Spectrum, despite a few that insist I haven't had a single tech so far attempt to reconfigure the wireless router, minus the phone support walking me through the setup and MAC workaround.
Netgear support took me through some setting changes for about an hour, but the modem never seemed to deliver a IP address or any information to the wireless router, minus that one short time where it was only outputting 10mbps.
The modem and router we provide for the Gig works together?
How do I set up my Orbi router and satellite?
Only when you connect your own router is it not working? Regards, Julia R. The GIG modem does not work when connected to a working verified this twenty minutes before on a mbps connection Nighthawk A The router displays the internet as "Not Connected".
A phone tech did get the modem to respond inside the router once, but that lasted for five minutes and only outputted 10mbps before a modem reboot knocked it back to "Not Connected". I get less range and slower speeds with the 1Gbps signal coming in than I did with the previous Spectrum modem at mbps and my Nighthawk A The modem doesn't appear to pass any data to the router - no IP address, nothing.
I've factory reset my router a ton of times too. I'm sorry I keep asking, but no one seems to be able to answer it.
What model modem are you using? When you have our router connected what is the link light doing? When you have your router connected after powercycling first the modem then your router what do you see the Link light doing on the modem? You are powercycling the modem and router when using this device when changing the configuration of what is connected to the modem correct?
Sounds like the Wave2 router provided by Spectrum was incorrectly programmed if it did not deliver even half the rated download speed of when your computer is cabled directly into a modem LAN port. The lack of employee familiarity with Gigabit service and hardware that you are experiencing may be one major reason that Spectrum has not approved any Gigabit-rated modems or gateways for customer purchase and installation.
They normally provide a Technicolor TC gateway for Gigabit connections. And since you said you had reset your router several times, I'll assume you know that any time you change the modem connected ahead of your [personally provided Netgear R] router, you MUST reset the router to factory defaults before attempting the self-install sequence. If you don't, the router won't collect all the needed Spectrum system setup values that are pushed over by the modem. You must have a Docsis 3. I understand that Docsis 3.
I think you will get up to MB with Docsis 3. You should read the article below to also make sure that your computer and hardware are compatible and ready for Gigbabit Internet.
Remember, you will never get the totally maximum range, but very close to that if all is well on your end, and ISP's end. Sign In.Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our review process here.

Our testing has consistently showed that the Netgear Orbi is one of the fastest, most reliable routers out on the market, making it the clear choice for anyone looking to upgrade their router for full home coverage, and the good news is that Netgear makes a version of it that includes a built-in DOCSIS 3.
Plus, you can set it up and control all of your settings through the very user-friendly mobile app app. While it may struggle a bit with some older 2. Perfect for a small home, the C comes equipped with two Gigabit Ethernet ports and dual antennas, which makes this a dual-band device 2.
However, the C's one weak point is with the wireless connection. And set up is a breeze—just unplug your old modem and plug everything into the C If you're looking to take your network performance up to a whole new level, Netgear's Nighthawk C is worth a closer look.
The beamforming four-antenna array also delivers AC Wi-Fi speeds of up to 3. Our testing demonstrates that it can handle cable services with speeds of up to 1Gbps and also includes four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, so you can hardwire your PC or gaming console into it if the On the other hand, it doesn't include a telephone jack, so you wont be able to connect any phone services to the router, which could be a problem if your bundle includes voice.
An integrated VPN feature also helps to secure your internet connection and allows for remote access when you're away from home. The integrated cable modem works with most providers and is certified for Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox, meaning you can get up and running quickly after buying this one and shouldn't even need to call your ISP. Unfortunately, the integrated cable modem means that you'll have to rely on your ISP rather than Asus for the latest firmware updates.
Four Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back let you hardwire in a PC or game console, plus there are two USB ports for sharing printers or external storage, and it's even compatible with Apple's Time Machineso if you're a Mac user you can use it to back up all of your computers over Wi-Fi. On the down side, while the Wi-Fi router provides great performance on for your wireless LAN, the higher internet connection latency on the cable modem side means this may not be the best choice for gamers.
Working with plans up to Mpbs, it will give you up to square feet of wireless coverage for 25 devices. Perfect for an apartment, office, or even a large home, and every device will be connected and ready for streaming without any lag or buffering. Plus, it comes equipped with two Gigabit Ethernet ports and one USB port for any wired needs you may have. It also boasts great durability. The six internal beamforming antennas also ensure that you can get stronger Wi-Fi signals in more distant corners of your house.
The CR is also easy to set up for most major cable ISPs, requiring only a web self-activation or phone call, as it's certified by most of them, and it can also be managed through TP-Link's Tether app for your iPhone or Android device, which lets you quickly enable a guest network when you need it as well as managing parental controls and scheduling access times.
The SB offers good coverage for a small-to-medium-sized home and dual-band 2. Even without the external antennas, however, it can cover 1, square feet at speeds of up to 1.
Not only are the Wi-Fi speeds blazingly fast, even in a large home, but the C also provides four Gigabit Ethernet ports for those times when only a wired connection will do. While it doesn't offer any advanced features like MU-MIMO or QoSit's not a serious omission for most home users considering that the available Wi-Fi bandwidth well exceeds the maximum speed of the cable internet connection.
Covering a 2, square foot home can be a problem for most cable internet provider rental modems, and the last things you want are slow internet speeds and an unreliable connection.
